The Little Sisters of the Poor from San Pedro, California wanted to go to the canonization ceremony of their founder Jeanne Jugan to be held at the Vatican. But since they are a "begging" order they couldn't just go to the cash machine, so according to the LA Times:

"To raise the nearly $10,000 they needed for the trip, the sisters held more than 20 fundraisers in three months. They sold hamburgers, nachos, hot dogs, Italian sausages, omelets, waffles and baked potatoes. They held bake sales, ice cream socials and a rummage sale. Twice they raised money by taking residents to a casino, and last week, in one of their final events, they hosted a country-western hoedown in their auditorium, complete with hay stacks and line dancing."

It is one of the great guilty pleasures of the cable/sat television world: you can get BBC America in most places and one of their great shows is a silly, sexy, funny show called Top Gear. It looks like it is about the car world past and present but it is really just boys playing around with expensive cars...and going fast. Celebrities try to beat each other each week on a race course and the Top Gear hosts travel the world for no particular reason except it has to do with cars.

Sometimes they stage goofy things to do (like drive a car down an Olympic ski jump run) or get a NUN to drive a monster truck and crush cars. Our kind of show. On BBCA.

I will admit that the following "festival" marking the approach of Lent sounds suspiciously like a Seinfeld routine, but it's in a real Danish paper and it doesn't look like an Onion article...at least not intentionally.

"The major aspects of the Danish ‘Fastelavn’ are beating a cat out of a barrel, singing ‘Fastelavn er mit navn’ and Lenten buns.

In the game of ‘Slå katten af tønden (beating a cat out of a barrel)’, the children hit a suspended wooden barrel that is full of candy until the bottom of the barrel breaks and candy starts to fall out. The child doing this becomes ‘kattedronning (queen of cats)’. After the candy pours out, the game continues until the entire barrel is broken. The child who knocks out the last piece of the barrel becomes ‘kattekonge (king of cats)’.

Today, the barrel has the image of a cat painted on it. Historically, however, there was a real black cat in the barrel, and beating it was superstitiously considered a safeguard against evil. It was once believed that killing a cat meant a town could avoid the plague."

Okay, pre-Vactican II nuns don't drive but the political ramifications in "nuns can't vote" Indiana and an attempt in Missouri to prevent nuns without ID from voting certainly made the news. That political stuff makes me want to say things I might have to confess so instead let me just remind everyone that driving a nun to the store or the pollling place will get you a very good, and very special place in heaven. God pays special attention to these kinds of things.

We certainly have nothing against spin-offs. Eva Mendes Just Not Nun Material

The sisterhood of the traveling wimple dodged a bullet when Cuban-American actress/bombshell Eva Mendes (Ghost Rider, 2 Fast 2 Furious) decided not to become a nun. The problem: not enough pay.

In an interview in the Kahleej Times (where I get all my news) Mendes said:

What were your dreams as a child?
I wanted to become a nun. I'm not kidding. My sister told me: “You know Eva, nuns don't get paid.” And I said: “Forget it!” I've always wanted a better life financially and was probably around ten years old when I came to that conclusion. I think I would have eventually said no to the nunnery, but that was definitely one of my ambitions as a child.

What made this funny was the comment was never IRONIC at all! But now let us introduce you to The Ironic Catholic. This is funny stuff and who would have thought Catholics (other than Joe Biden of course) could be this funny.

Embracing Your Cultural Catholic

There is a new game (or do they call it a meme?) where we, the great unwashed, "google" ourselves to see what our connectivity and importance in the world is. Tosh. Everyone is important. But I noticed whenever I googled things about being catholic one site kept coming up which seemed to explain it all to us. The Cultural Catholic.

One of the reasons that Growing Up Catholic and Nuns Having Fun (books and the heavenly CALENDAR) have had such a great reception, is the shared culture of having participated in the Catholic faith in many different ways. Indeed the pre and post Vatican II view of the world sometimes seperates us but we are brought back together by not just nostalgia but shared beliefs.

The icing on the cake or the insense in the censor, was this nice correspondence with the webmaster of Cultural Catholic, Sharon:

Thanks for bringing this brand to the Catholic public. My late brother, a product of New York City Catholic grammar and high schools during the time period of the calender, had the Nuns Having Fun calendar hanging in his downtown Manhattan insurance company office where it garnered much attention. For me it was a nun in high school who inspired a love of good books and even the scribbling I did in Growing Up Catholic. I still have a note from that Sister congratulating us on making the bestseller list. I remember the exact moment I got "it" about what was great and lasting in books and plays. We were reading The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene and Sister's thoughtful teaching of that book let me know there was a lot more going on than I had first thought.

There is a nice article about the First Folio Theatre in Chicago and the artistic director of that fine theatre who had a similar experience:

Alison traces her own love of theatre and Shakespeare back to grade school, where an intuitive nun had her students reading Shakespeare out loud in class. "We took turns reading ‘Romeo and Juliet' out loud and I found that I naturally loved the rhythm, it made sense to me spoken out loud. Then in college I had a professor who almost killed it for me."
